How to overcome sexual temptation and pornography addiction by being filled with the spirit and using Covenant Eyes internet accountability software.

Tired of fighting the unwinnable war? Life seems to be full of so many insurmountable problems, and sexual temptation is one of them. With the advent of the internet, overcoming sexual temptation has become harder than ever.

This problem is not unique to you or anyone else – the Bible says it is common.

No temptation has overtaken you, but that which is common to man.” 1 Cor. 10:13

The internet is everywhere, and so is the problem. Most men struggle with sexual temptation, and some women do too. Statistics show that 70 percent of men and over 20 percent of women struggle with internet pornography. These are not bad people. They are normal people with powerful sexual desires that have grown out of control.

God has not left us alone to struggle with these desires – desires that He created in the first place to be satisfied within the confines of a marital relationship. But marriage is not to be seen as the solution to a sexual problem. It may help, but it is not the answer. Sexual appetite without constraint can never be satisfied.

God has promised us a way through every temptation, a way of escape, and there is a way out of bondage to pornography and other forms of sexual temptation.

The war of sexual temptation is a war fought in the flesh (our fallen human condition) and this is something we all live with. The solution to containing our sexual desires is self-control, and this is a fruit of the Spirit. Only by being “in the Spirit” can you win this war.

Walk in the spirit and you will not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Gal. 5:16)

Jesus came to give us His Spirit. He is our Helper in this war. That is where the answer lies. The answer is in a person.

Because the war is between the flesh and the spirit your own fleshly efforts (try harder, make promises) are to no avail. Do you suppose that fighting the flesh in the flesh will solve the problem? Only by being in the Spirit will you have the power to overcome the works of the flesh. “The flesh profits nothing.

The mind of the flesh … is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” (Romans 6:7,8) … or win the war.

Paul experienced this war in the flesh, and wrote about it to the Romans. He said, in effect, “I don’t understand what is going on here. I end up doing the very things I don’t want to do, and the things I want to do, I fail in doing. It seems like I am incapable of doing good, even though inside I really want to. There seems to be a law inside me that overtakes the good that I want to do. So if I end up doing what I don’t want to do, it must be something else inside me making me do the evil. What’s going on here? O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Rom. 7:15 – 25 paraphrased.)

There is much debate on this passage of scripture. Who does Romans 7 apply to? … Is Paul talking about his life prior to his conversion experience, or after? Let me simplify it for you. It applies to anyone who is living in the flesh, anyone not living out of the power of the Spirit!

Overcoming sexual temptation begins by living a Spirit-filled life. If we are living in the flesh (without an on-going living connection to God’s divine flow in our life) then succumbing to sexual temptation will be a natural consequence of being a natural man.

Are you not merely human?” Paul says, when you struggle with issues of the flesh. The inference is that if we are succumbing to the temptations of the world then we must be without God and merely human. There is a distinct advantage to being born again and filled with His Spirit.

And that is why it is all by grace, and not your own fleshly efforts. It is by grace you are saved. By grace you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and by walking in the spirit you will overcome these things. By grace you have begun, and by grace you will be perfected.

Jesus said that if we would abide in Him we would bear much fruit. (John 15:4) The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, self-control and all the other good things. (Gal. 5:22) It’s the simple act of abiding in Christ that accomplishes so much. The war is won by One. It is His obedience on the cross that provides our success in life in overcoming the consequences of the fall. When we sin we are tempted to look at our record of disobedience and become discouraged. This will never accomplish anything. We must look to the obedience of Christ on the cross. By the obedience of ONE many are made righteous. (Rom. 5:19) Looking to His obedience on the cross will take the focus away from our own self efforts, and remind us that it is only by abiding in Him and His finished work that we become winners in this war. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!

So how do we avail ourselves of this gift? Jesus Himself said that it was expedient that He leave us, so that He could send the promise from the Father – the gift of the Holy Spirit. (John 16:7) Once we have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we are encouraged to remain filled to overflowing with an awareness of His presence, because this is the true source of the New Testament believers power. The devil will do all he can to keep us from realising this fact. Nothing hinders him more than a believer on full charge. How’s your battery? Maybe you need another infilling of the Holy Spirit?

Be filled with the spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” (Eph. 5:19)

Here is a very simple and practical way to win the unwinnable war … stay filled with the Spirit. Stay connected to the life that is in Christ Jesus. Be continually being filled with the Spirit of God. And how do you do that? By singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. By singing songs?!!! There must be more to it than that, surely! There are many practical things we should do to avoid temptation of course, (see below) but being filled with the Spirit is an essential element to overcoming temptation.

There are 3 practical keys to overcoming sexual temptation:
1. Praying regularly
2. Reading the Bible daily
3. Witnesses

The third key is the most effective. If you are to win the war against online pornography you will not win it alone. You need others in the battle with you. You need accountability. There are very practical ways to achieve this. Here is one resource I recommend.
